What our book cover design service involves

A cover has two jobs. It must catch attention in a crowded search results page, and it must tell the right reader what kind of book this is within a second. A romance, a thriller and a business book each follow visual conventions that readers understand instantly, and ignoring them costs clicks.

Our approach

How we handle book cover design

We begin cover design by looking at the top books in your category. Not to copy them, but to understand the signals that readers recognise: typography style, image type, colour range and title size. A cover should feel at home on the shelf while still standing out from its neighbours.

Then we test. The cover is shrunk to the size of a thumbnail in a search result, viewed in greyscale and checked on a phone screen. If the title cannot be read or the image becomes muddy, we change it. Only after the front cover works do we build the spine and back cover, which need your final page count.

Common mistakes we help you avoid

• Too much going on. Busy covers fall apart at thumbnail size. One clear image and one clear title usually work best.
• Unreadable titles. Fancy fonts that nobody can read lose clicks. Legibility comes first.
• Wrong genre signals. A thriller that looks like a romance attracts the wrong readers and disappoints the right ones.
