How to Self-Publish a Book on Amazon KDP: A Practical Guide

Self-publishing with Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) lets you release an ebook and a paperback without waiting for a traditional publisher. You control the book, the price and the rights. The process is straightforward once you know the order of the steps, and most problems come from skipping preparation. This guide walks through the stages we see authors go through, from finished manuscript to live listing.

Step 1: Finish the book before you touch the dashboard

The KDP dashboard is for uploading, not for fixing. Before you open it, your manuscript should have been through at least one round of editing. If you are unsure what level of editing you need, read our guide on developmental editing, line editing and proofreading. Readers notice typos and weak structure, and reviews are hard to undo.

Step 2: Prepare the interior and the cover

A word processor file is not a finished book. Print needs a chosen trim size, margins that allow for the binding, page numbers and consistent chapter styles. An ebook needs clean structure and a working table of contents. Our interior formatting service prepares both versions to the platform specification.

The cover is just as important. Ebook covers are a single image, while paperbacks need a full wrap with front, spine and back. The spine width depends on your final page count and paper type, so the cover is finished last. See our book cover design page for what a professional cover includes.

Step 3: Create your own KDP account

Always publish through an account in your own name. KDP will ask for your author or publisher details, tax information and a bank account for royalties. Do not share these with anyone, and avoid services that ask to publish on your behalf under their account, because then they hold your rights and your payments. We are an independent company and are not affiliated with Amazon or KDP; we guide authors through the process while the account stays yours.

Step 4: Enter the book details

The listing is what readers see, so write it carefully.

  • Title and subtitle: clear and accurate. Non-fiction titles often benefit from a subtitle that states the benefit.
  • Description: open with a hook, explain what the reader will gain or experience and use short paragraphs.
  • Keywords: think about the phrases a real reader would type, not just your own words for the book.
  • Categories: choose the ones that match your genre and readers, because they decide which shelves your book appears on.

Step 5: Upload, preview and order a proof

Upload the manuscript and cover, then use the online previewer on every page. Look for cut-off text, odd line breaks, images that moved and headings stranded at the bottom of pages. For paperbacks, order a printed proof copy. Holding the book shows problems no screen can.

Step 6: Set pricing and rights

KDP offers different royalty options that depend on your price, the format and the markets you choose, and the terms can change, so read the current rules on the platform before deciding. Many authors price a new ebook lower to attract first readers and price the paperback to cover printing costs plus a margin. Choose your territories and confirm that you hold the rights to everything in the book, including images and quotes.

Step 7: Publish and plan the first weeks

After you submit, the book goes through a review. Clean files help avoid delays. Meanwhile, plan how readers will find you: tell your email list, share the news and consider early reviews from advance readers who have actually read the book. A short book launch checklist keeps the first weeks organised.

Do you need help?

Many authors manage the whole process themselves, and many prefer a guide. If you want support with files, listing or setup, our KDP publishing services prepare everything and walk you through the dashboard while you remain the owner of your account, rights and royalties.
